Average wage was given as $20,500 in 1990.  Maximum wage base was $51,300. Further all the amounts have been converted into 1990 dollars, so our lessons on inflation will not be needed for this chart. 

Now, be sure that we use these numbers as just wild guesses. We have no real idea what the lawmakers will do to this system. I do not personally believe you should even consider this in your retirement planning.  At best, Social Security is only estimated to provide about 25 to 35% of your future needs!

Check the annual report you receive from the SS office for your own estimate!

Consider if you will, but do not rely on Social Security for your future needs.
